Since 1993, leaf blight has crippled the Samoan taro plant export industry, wiping out whole crops and forcing an Australian ban on imports.
Now, scientist Amy Maslen-Miller is working on a strain of taro that is resistant to the devastating fungus.
She also uses her Indigenous Samoan heritage to inform her work as a scientist, applying traditional techniques to modern science.
