The United Nations sent a special envoy to Crimea overnight to assess the dispute between Russia and Ukraine. He promptly departed the area, however, after receiving threats from pro-Russian gunmen and protesters, amid rising tensions between the two neighbours in the Crimean peninsula. This makes it appear less likely the UN will be able to resolve the conflict.
