Researchers hope for genetic rescue of rare bird

A team of researchers and volunteers led by Monash University hope to rescue the Helmeted Honeyeater by crossbreeding it with a close genetic relative.

The process, known as “genetic rescue”, is a way for conservationists to deal with the pitfalls associated with inbreeding.

It comes as the team published the findings of a study spanning 20 years outlined just how inbreeding affects the survivability of the species.
