Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders broke the rules preventing them from enlisting in the world wars and  managed to sign up anyway.  As well as those that served overseas, many Aboriginal communities  supported  the war effort from home, including coastal communities who acted as radars when the Japanese attacked the Top End.  Any communities that have such stories,  or  know of relatives who fought and were not acknowledged, can contact  Michael Bell at The Australian War Memorial- [email protected] .
