It’s a place called Utopia, but living conditions in the central Australian desert community have been labeled shocking and inhumane by Amnesty International’s secretary-general. The Northern Territory Government has been accused of neglecting the homelands by just focusing money and resources on a small number of “growth towns”.
About a third of the Territory’s Aboriginal population lives on the homelands. One expert’s told The Wire that providing for the homelands shouldn’t be seen as an imposition, but rather a worthwhile investment that’s in the national interest.
