A bill to restrict late-term abortion access has been defeated in South Australia’s Upper House, voted down 11 to eight.

Women’s reproductive rights are back in the spotlight for the second time in under a year. The legislation, introduced by Fair Go for Australians leader, Sarah Games MLC, attempted to wind back abortion access to 22 weeks and six days.

The proposal sparked fierce debate from both sides, with rallies held across the city in recent weeks.

Under current SA law, abortions after 23 weeks are permitted with approval from two doctors if a woman’s physical or mental health is at serious risk. The bill would have removed those provisions, drawing strong opposition from pro-choice advocates.
