At the turn of the twentieth century Koalas were almost hunted to extinction.
Demand was high for their furs in the fashion houses of London and New York, driving the Queensland government to declare ‘open season’ in August of 1927.
The backlash to the decision is thought to be one of Australia’s first conservation movements.
