A government subsidy program costing billions of dollars is actually achieving the opposite of its aim, to conserve more Murray-Darling water.

So says a new Australian study in the most prestigious international scientific journal, Science.

According to the study, so-called “irrigation efficiency” is actually depriving the Murray-Darling of water at a time when it needs it most, and all at a significant cost to the tax payer.
