Tough talk from W.A. Treasurer Dr Mike Nahan has got everyone wondering about the GST state carve up formula. The mining boom/bust cycle has created a low share for WA this time around, but many experts believe this is a normal business cycle, and WA should have expected a revenue downturn from lower royalties. Perhaps a two stage approach could be adopted to allow for these anomalies.
