In January 2014, at the United Nations in Geneva, Australia called out Cambodia’s human rights abuses, ”particularly the disproportionate violence against protesters, including detention without trial”. One month later, a deal was put in place to re-settle refugees from offshore processing centers to Cambodia, in exchange for $40 million in aid from Australia. Fast forward one year, and not a single refugee has chosen to go to Cambodia. A documentary made by a Phnom Penh native might just provide insight as to why.
