Last week, militants in Pakistan killed 93 people when they attacked two mosques in the city of Lahore. The violence is just the latest chapter in the persecution of a long-established community in the sub-continent – the targets of the attack were followers of the Ahmadiyya branch of Islam, a sect that the Pakistani government has labelled ‘non-Muslim’. The attack on Friday has raised questions about the treatment of minority groups in Pakistan, and the extent to which the government is complicit in fostering discrimination.
