In 2001, Elizabeth Grant, a lecturer from the Centre for Indigneous Research at the University of Adelaide, accompanied an Aboriginal mother as she sat through an inquest on her son’s suicide in prison. Elizabeth’s background is in Aboriginal architecture, but this experience has lead her to investigate the needs of Aboriginal prisoners and what we can learn from current systems in countries such as Canada and New Zealand. She explained to The Wire what is currently inappropriate about Australia’s prisons for Aboriginal offenders.
