$60 million to assist Victoria’s mental health system meltdown

The Victorian government has pledged 60-million-dollars in funding to its mental health system, as new research shows a sharp increase in the number of Victorians being admitted to hospital emergency departments with self-harm and/or acute mental distress.

The announcement last Sunday comes as the state’s health system is experiencing even greater pressure from hospitalisations caused by the second wave of coronavirus infections.

Premier Daniel Andrews has described the state’s mental health system as already “broken” and says this funding will allow Victorians struggling in lockdown to access necessary treatment.
