Calls to Keep Kids Under Fourteen Out of Jail

In a demonstration in front of the notorious Don Dale Detention Centre in Darwin, Amnesty International and Indigenous groups pressured the Territory Government to increase the age a child can be tried and punished for a crime, from 10 to 14.

The incarceration of children disproportionately affects Indigenous Australians, who are 24 times more likely to be imprisoned than their non-indigenous counter-parts, according to a 2015 Amnesty International report.

The Labor Territory government currently support changing “in-principle” the threshold of criminal liability from 10 to 12 and ending imprisonment of minors under 14 unless necessary.
