Gary Outten worked as a refugee counsellor on Nauru and then Manus Island from 2012 until October 2017. He says it was very difficult to counsel asylum seekers being held in prison-like conditions and with no hope for a future. Many are now in Mort Moresby hoping to get work in a city crowded with unemployed locals and branded one of the most violent cities in the world.
