The History of Myanmar’s Political and Social Unrest

Over the past few days, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar amid fears of ethnic cleansing.

The second mass exodus in less than a year has brought the South-East Asian region back into the international spotlight, after reports of nearly 400 civilian deaths, and more than 73-thousand refugees attempting to enter neighbouring Bangladesh.

A history of cultural and religious differences, as well as colonial immigration patterns, are crucial factors contributing to the current state of the country.
