As the rates of HIV increased in Australia in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, policies were put in place to curb transmission. Victoria was the only state to also implement a law, criminalizing the intentional transmission of HIV. Rather than protecting people, this law led to stigmatization of people living with HIV, and represented a shift away from more effective public health solutions. A Bill to repeal the last was passed by the lower house last week, bringing hope that the law will soon be abolished.
